COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AFP) - International lingerie maker Victoria's Secret has withdrawn its Buddha-print bikini and apologised to Buddhists, Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said.
Victoria's Secret made a written apology after Sri Lanka, a majority Buddhist nation, protested against the use of the Buddha images for the company's swimwear.
In a statement, the foreign ministry quoted the company expressing "sincere apologies" and saying it had no intention of showing any disrespect to the Buddha or Buddhism.
Last month, Sri Lanka's police and customs were ordered to seize Buddha Bar music and bikinis sporting Buddha images after the Supreme Court ordered a strict enforcement of laws prohibiting the use of religious symbols for commercial use.
The order was made after Buddhist monk Daranaagama Kusaladhamma petitioned the court to ban Victoria's Secret bikinis with Buddha images, candles in the shape of the Buddha and Buddha Bar albums which carry pictures of the Buddha.
The monk told court the commercial exploitation of the Buddha image had hurt the feelings of Buddhists who constitute nearly 70 percent of the island's 19 million population.
so can we check them out?
sadly there were no pictures with the article
maybe theyll be on the victorias secret website
found it - it's not on the VS website
Now, how can anyone protest something that looks as hot as that?!
hahaha
you wanna try being a buddhist
'ooo buddha was too holy to fook'
'ooo buddha didnt have to ****'
etc etc etc
when will these people ever get real
haha nice pic well i looked into buddhism once and man even if i was buddhist i couldnt resist a chick that hot
im a buddhist but i didnt get offended by it
@smog,
Maybe if your god's picture is being wore as a cover for someone's hoo-ha, you would protest too.
@Col Man,
Uhhh actually..all you said are just wrong. We know that our Buddha was a human, he had a wive and children, he **** and he was just like any other human. Except for the fact that he was a human, but a superior human. Superior than any of us because he left his fortune as a prince to seek peace for himself and for others. And because of that fact, we respect him and we worship him. Say for example, if the face of someone who you admire and respect so much was printed on an underwear, how would you feel? Well, that's how we feel right now.
