BEIJING (AFP) - Pageant-crazy China is planning a special beauty contest for its older citizens, with an eye to a potential audience of well over 100 million people, state media reported.
The contest, which will conclude in a grand televised finale in November, will be open to anyone over the age of 55, the Xinhua news agency said.
The event appears to have the backing from the highest political level, as a ceremony held this weekend to launch the contest was attended by Chi Haotian, a former vice chairman of the extremely powerful Central Military Commission.
The event will just be the latest in a series of specialized pageants in China, following recently announced plans for a contest open only to women who have undergone plastic surgery to look prettier.
Also in November, China will host a beauty contest for men.
China has finally ended Communist rule and adopted the shallow attitudes of the West! Such a happy day! Soon we shall see Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts on every corner - you mark my word!
