LONDON (AFP) - Coastguards and a bee-keeper intervened to save a man who had become trapped on his boat off the coast of Wales by a swarm of bees.
The lone 51-year-old crewman was evacuated from his angling vessel, Castaway, which was anchored about two miles (three kilometres) out from Penclawdd on the south Wales coast.
The coastguard and a lifeboat were able to reach the man and bring him ashore before he could be hurt by the bees.
"He said he was lucky when the swarm landed on the deck he managed to dive into the cabin and take cover and call us by radio," said coastguard watch officer Steve Jones.
"They have located a bee-keeper in (nearby) Burry Port and the lifeboat is going to take him out to see if he can get hold of the queen bee," he said.
The unnamed bee-keeper later succeded in clearing the bees from the boat using smoke.
"I have never heard of this before," Jones added. "It is amazing."
I imagine the entire coastal fishing community is buzzing with the news.
