Butterfly with two different patterns on wings?

Hi! I live in a small town called Sandy Hollow, in rural NSW Australia.

Today I spotted a small butterfly (no bigger than a 20c coin) that was sitting still on a leaf. The section of the wings that i could see (the undersides) were black with vibrant blue, red and perhaps orange sections... yet when it began to flutter i noticed that the topside of the wings were light (almost white) with a black fringe. It was a curious sight as it created a somewhat shimmering effect when it flew.

Is anybody able to tell me what species of butterfly this may be, as i have bever seen a butterfly with patterns such as these?
