Man, 76, beats up wife, 78, in driving lesson row

BERLIN (Reuters) - A 76-year-old German man who set out to give his 78-year-old wife a driving lesson instead put her in hospital by hitting and strangling her when she failed to follow his instructions, police say.


"There was initially a verbal dispute, which then turned into physical violence on the part of the husband," police in the western town of Mettmann said in a statement on Wednesday.


Eyewitnesses alarmed by the violent scenes accompanying the man's efforts to familiarise his wife with their new car alerted emergency services. They separated the pair before giving first aid to the woman and taking her to hospital.


Police later imposed a restraining order on the man and said he would be charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
