The next time you see someone reading a newspaper, consider the following:

The WALL ST. JOURNAL is read by the people who run the country.

The NY Times is read by people who think they run the country.

The Washington Post is read by people who think they should run the country.

USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country but don't really understand the Washington Post. However, they do like their smog statistics shown in pie charts.

The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind running the country, if they could spare the time, and IF they didn't have to leave L.A. to do it.

The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the country.

The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure who's running the country, and really don't care, as long as they can get a seat on the train.

The New York Post is read by people who don't care who's running the country, as long as they do something really scandalous, preferably while intoxicated.

The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't sure there is a country, or that anyone is running it, but whoever it is, they oppose all that they stand for.

The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another country, but need the baseball scores.

The National Enquirer is read by people trapped in line at the grocery stores.

Thanks for posting that, au. Nice to see anyone cares enough about newspapers these days to do that kind of analysis!

I like that, au. I might be in the minority, but I still like to sit down and read my local newspaper. I can read the parts I want to and skip the ads if I'm not in the mood for "commercials". However, my local newspaper is not at all like the ones mentioned above!
Very Happy

(ha ha!)

The Seattle Times is read by people who think the governor of Washington runs the country, hate traffic, and wish they could drive home in the carpool lane.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is read by people who think the governer of Washington runs the country, hate traffic, and wish they could ride a monorail home.

(okay, not very good, but just gotta take a shot at these papers here...)\

The Sacramento Bee is read by people who don't care who runs the country as long as the Kings are winning and there are plenty of stories about serial killers, pets, and ancient white Dixieland jazz musicians...

I'm more worried about the people who have NO newspaper reading habit...

About 60% of the adult US population, if newspaper readership and household penetration statistics are any barometer...

Do you guys have a paper called The Metro in your towns? We have this here in Boston and is a little over a year old. It's a free paper totally designed for those riding the T or Metro or whatever your public train system is called. I think it is edited by people with ADD. It has the shortest articles I have ever seen and the top of each article has a sentence in bold print that summarizes the story. It reminds me of reading in grammar school. You can get all the worlds news in about 5 sentences....WAY TO BE INFORMED

Newspapers are desperate right now to do something, anything, to boost circulation, especially among younger readers. Hence all the coverage of shows like "Survivor" and "American Idol". I can just see the editors tearing their hair out trying to figure out what the kids will want to read. Because if they don't, the papers may be doomed!

I read the newspaper every single day for over thirty years and then moved to another city and eventually stopped, now reading just the Sunday edition. I felt like PDiddie, going as far as to break off a budding relationship long ago because the guy didn't read the newspaper. Who didn't read the newspaper??!!
I think it was the familiarity of that particular newspaper, The Chicago Sun-Times, and the daily habit of stopping at the newsstand that was broken when I moved. Transferring the habit to a new city was, surprisingly, not as natural a thing as one would think. At least, not for me.

dys -

my old hometown newspaper publishes the "news of record," too. what addresses got visited by the sheriff's office, who got nailed driving drunk. i always about the legality of that, or the potential damages the paper could face if somebody flips out and goes after one of those people...

Patiodog, those police blotter columns are matters of public record, hence can be published, though I agree with you that it raises questions of safety sometimes. Not to mention humiliation!

Who wants to see their address in the paper for stories like: "Police responded to neighbor's complaints of hideous noises and bizarre smells coming from the house. Residents were removed from the house in handcuffs and taken to an undisclosed location. Officers in haz mat suits were overcome by foul smells as they removed items from the residence..."

Could just about ruin one's reputation in town! Embarrassed

The local Metro has VERY edited versions of what's in the largest circulation paper in town. I used to think it was just horrid, and then realized that people who normally didn't read any newspaper were starting to read the paper - sometimes children, sometimes immigrants/refugees with very basic English. I hope this basic newspaper will lead to reading other, more 'advanced' sources of news, and I suspect it does in some cases. I'd rather see people reading something/anything on the subway than staring vacantly into the space above my head.

Before i got the dogs, i had a subscription to one paper, and got two more (sometimes 3) on saturdays and sundays. those days are over. Now it's an occasional paper. I read books on the subway and at lunch, and follow the news on the radio (and sometimes something in the Metro catches my eye as I'm looking over someone's shoulder so I grab a paper to read a more complete article).

I read the San Jose Mercury News almost every morning with my coffee. Most of the front page news is really yesterday's news, but sometimes there are interesting information that is not covered by the t.v. news stations. I skim through the newspaper pretty quickly, and read most of the headlines. I read a few of the comics as one of my last rituals, before I fold my paper in half, walk to my car, and drive the 2-3 blocks home. Wink c.i.

I read the editorial page and the sport section of the NY Daily news and then turn on the computer and read the NY Times,CNN and MSNBC. And time permitting several news magazines.
