An elderly American tourist had to be rescued in Germany after he lost his way using a 90-year-old guide book.

Hank Edwards, 79, got stuck in the Bayreuth forest for two days when he followed directions from a guide bought by his father in 1914.

"He told us he had read it as a boy and had always wanted to visit the places listed in it," said a police spokesman, who added that two world wars and other changes meant most topography in the book no longer existed.
