The mother of all dogs may have been an asian wolf.
I had absolutely NO idea that there were
any dogs from so long ago...what a new
idea.

Those look like some interesting sources. My original post was from a newsclipping I ran accross. I don't have the whole article anymore but what interested me was that new research suggests that dogs as a distinct specie are amazingly young, less than 30,000 years old I think it said and originated from an asian wolf.
Actually, that photo is my folks' back yard (on Long Island), taken in autumn of I think 2001.
Gonna cross-post this topic to Pets & Garden.
I don't know this to be fact, but an acquaintence who is a Veterinarian tells me there is no more difference between the DNA of wolves and dogs than from people from Peking and Pittsburg. The species distinction is an invention, like the dog itself, of human convenience.
