My hair suddenly parts very strongly down the middle, and when I run my hands through it it mildly hurts at the roots, and feels as if I was wearing a hat very tightly all day. What could be the cause?

Maybe your scalp is sunburned. That is possible.

Have you had it tied up/back tightly lately? It could be it is drying against the way the hair grows out of your head making it sensitive like having it tied tightly all day then releasing hair only to find root sensitivity. This should only last a couple hours at most.

One of the most common causes of a painful scalp is the use of harsh chemicals that can result in sores on the scalp. Hair coloring and shampoos that contain sodium laureth sulfate are particularly harsh and continued use of these products will strip the hair and scalp of the natural protective oils.
