MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian secret services have intercepted a Soviet-era tank and an armored personnel carrier that were being illegally shipped off to neighboring Turkey, ITAR-TASS reported.
The report gave few details but said the two vehicles were being sent under cover of farm machinery.
The T-80 tank and the second armored vehicle were reported by ITAR-TASS to be worth about a million dollars (810,000 euros). The suspects, who were not identified, face up to seven years in jail if convicted.
Russia's military has been struggling since the Soviet Union's collapse, and there have been several high-profile reports of equipment being sold off on the side by struggling officers, including in the war in Chechnya.
Ah yes! Many farmers are tilling the fields with tanks these days!
