Is there a (loom) weaver in the house?

I'm helping to organize a fundraising garage sale and several people have donated some fantastic items for us to sell.

One item is a loom. It isn't put together. I have no idea what they're worth/what it will actually sell for.

I've written to the loom maker trying to get information and I'm waiting to hear back but I don't have a lot of time so I'm looking everywhere for answers.

(I'll post some photos of the loom below where the buttons make photos easier to post.)

Thanks!

The donor says it is made from birdseye maple.

I did call a local shop to see what they could tell me. They are the ones that gave me the maker's email address. They did say I could call them back with further questions but to be honest, I'm not even sure what to ask.

@boomerang,
I'm just going to say WOW !!!

that looks like a gorgeous loom

I've done a tiny bit and have friends who weave a lot. I enjoy it, but don't have the space for a full loom set up.

Beautiful piece of functional art.

I've been absolutely dumbfounded by some of the stuff people have donated.

@ehBeth,
The woman I spoke with the morning was able to walk me through a few parts to determine sort of what I had -- a 4 shaft, 6 treadle loom.

I don't know either. Also have a land arch friend who teaches weaving and several of her pieces, but... her loom's not for sale. Her loom was similar to that one, though I don't remember details of it, never having weaved myself. Her husband, very good at carpentry, made it. My brother in law (I still call him that) made a loom that was in my memory about three times the size, for his then girlfriend. Quite a carpenter he was and still is.. building inspector too, and also built or remodeled houses for himself and later wife. But there wasn't a price on that huge loom either.

Sorry, I've no clue what questions to ask, but maybe there is some weaving institute on line that might have info on the right questions, and where to find pricing besides ebay, etc.

@boomerang,
my wife has several, the biggest is a 12 harness Le Clerc, (a Canadian brand). Its all maple (which is about the best for floor looms because its stable)
She has one with a programmable shuttle and she can do "yardage" on it. She does design work with the big one.
Looms can be all over the place.200$ to 5000$ depending on their quality
Id contact "The Manning's" its a large eaving and equipment sales and service company in Pa.

@ossobuco,
I got the name of the woman I spoke with this morning from the local weaver's guild website.

I'm guessing that it is some sort of professional courtesy that had her suggest I try to contact the maker first. I don't know how these things work but it seems to be a pretty tight community.

You should post some of your wife's textiles on here for us to see! Would she let you do that?

I'm learning that not only is there a huge range of models and prices but that there are distinct regional differences too....

@boomerang,
what brand is it? Is it an auto shuttle "dobby"? or a foot banger or "mexican Floor style"?
My wifes was originally 3K but that model is now in the 7K range. mannings keeps the info on USED looms (looms are like statues, unless they are really abused, they last for ever and harnesses can be bought from manufacturers)

Ill ask but most of her stuff now is belgian lace shawls and she is moe into texture and the pattern. She does belgian lace like Luba Kretchky(who died quite a number of years ago).
Lets get your loom priced to sell.

I don't even know what those words mean.

It's made by J-Made (a local guy, apparently)

The main part is 53.5" wide x 54.5 inches high x 12" deep

It doesn't have a computer -- all manual.

It DOES have an amazing bench (that opens like a piano bench) that matches (it's hard to see in the photos I posted because other parts are on top of it.

It doesn't have a model number or anything other than the tag I posted the photo of.

I need to make sure I price it to sell (and will offer free delivery so I can up it just a bit) and not ask for what it is probably worth. Honestly though, I'd probably pay up to $100 just for the bench.

@boomerang,
most benches are like that. Theyll have a lidded section nd an open section on either side.

a dobby is an automatic elctric shuttle
A Mexican hs a huge overhead drop frame from which the "heddles" hng. The heddles are the frames that hold the pattern that tells the warp where to drop and accept the yarn or just stay put and dont include tht color into the yardage.

I must herein testify that Im only repeating what I lerned after 30 + years of hanging around her studio and listening to her either talk to me, her students, or herself.
I dont want to sound like I know what Im tlking about except for the construction of looms. If its oak, it not the best, oak is not a stable wood. Dene growth maple or cherry make the best (and Le Clerc and Macomber looms seem to have held their values .
US prices are somewhat loer than Candian I think.
A craftsman made loom can be even more rare and collectible than a brand(especially if its somekind of more appealing wood, like spalted ash or figured maple or quarter sawn cherry

@farmerman,
UHHH, I went to j-made and they hve severql pges from Oregon City. There are also several limked yarn and supply shops that handle em, why not call them direct (their numbers are there)

I may be giving you all BS about the brand and I later find out its made of mahogany and curlymaple. the more exotic the workmanship and the wood used, the more Id ask.

Pine is fine, but its soft, and unremarkeable.
I hope yours is figured or some nice wood
