A farmer upset at not getting his party's nomination to run for the a Mexican state legislature has nailed himself to a wooden cross and donned a crown of thorns in a protest outside the state's electoral office.

Juan Villanueva, of the mining and farming town of Ojo Caliente, 25 miles south of the state capital of Zacatecas, had his companions hammer his hands to the cross with two five-inch nails in front of television cameras in the city's main plaza.

Villanueva lay on the cross for over an hour until he was received by electoral officials and filed a complaint.
