Christopher Hitchens is a big blowhard. Did anyone read of his arguments with (I think Katha Pollit) at "The Nation?" He has become a blustering figure whom I no longer respect. And a lot of what he said in this article is bullshite, which he's become quite good at. Who cares what he thinks?

This article could be torn apart sentence by sentence to show Hitchen's bias and outright lies, but I'm not gonna bother. Here are just two examples;

"Either the Saudis run U.S. policy (through family ties or overwhelming economic interest), or they do not."

Who said it's one or the other? Not Moore. He simply pointed out that there are huge amounts of Saudi money invested in the US, not that they "run" it. Hitchens is putting words in other people's mouths, and that's good enough for you, Miller?

"The American lives lost in Afghanistan have been wasted. (This I divine from the fact that this supposedly "antiwar" film is dedicated ruefully to all those killed there, as well as in Iraq.)"

Oh really? And how does he know it's "ruefully" dedicated? Obviously, he figured that word might resonate with certain people. I'm not at all convinced.

I could go on...

Quote:
He prefers leaden sarcasm to irony and, indeed, may not appreciate the distinction. In a long and paranoid (and tedious) section at the opening of the film,

Is that an apt description of Hitchins' prose or what?

Hey, Suzy, do you think we should take this Miller guy out behind the A2K building and slap him around a bit?

Probably not. He's suffering enough already.

I love this stuff, Moore creates a 90 minute show based upon fact. Don't forget he shows you actual stuff, you draw the conclusion. He then adds side bits and juxtiposes scenes to help his desires. Righties are going crazy -

Rush has 4 hours every day, uses blatant lies and never backs up with fact. He's is Bush Minister of Information.

Jesus Christ, give me a break.

Fact? Which fact comes from F911? That Moore is in it? That seems to be about the only fact evident in this schmuckumentary.

You wouldn't know a fact - Rush, Bush(s) and Reagan haven't told you a fact to think in 24 years - the factless society, live on the lies. What a laugh.......

For all you righties that are unable to understand, Michael more gives you the pure facts - the actually picture and words of the actual event. Your mind conjures the truth and it doesn't agree with what you are told to think. You don't like this, so you say Moore has told you a lie. Now you got equilibrium in place, and you can go back to believing your lies.

Now Michael Moore adds some comments to cover transitions and introductions etc. Well, these are to add to the humor - but, not necessarily the facts; because they are in front of you already.

TEN months ago in this space, I wrote that "the rise of an ardent, passion ate, angry and engaged Left is the most important political story of 2003 . . . There is a large and hungry audience in the land for a leftist political-cultural message."
The colossal success of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" confirms that the most important political story of 2003 is in the running to be the most important political story in 2004. Moore's movie has already sold something like 6 million tickets, a vital demonstration of the cultural energy and enthusiasm that has erupted on the populist Left.

This is an important phenomenon, and its enemies on the Right need to grant the populist Left the respect it deserves. There's no sense coming up with silly arguments to explain how this isn't really the most successful documentary of all time. It is. Deal with it.

The "Fahrenheit 9/11" triumph proves yet again that you can't manufacture a cultural trend, or simply create an institution by willing it into existence. Michael Moore has been building a career as a demagogue for more than 15 years now, with books and TV shows and documentaries. He's the real thing, an American original ?- as opposed to Air America Radio, which was created by elitists trying to imitate somebody else's populist invention.

The Bush hatred that has given such explosive life to "Fahrenheit 9/11" is real, it's being harnessed brilliantly by Moore and others for fun and profit and it's given the Left a renewed sense of excitement.

Excitement and enthusiasm are vital qualities for a resurgent political movement. Its followers need to believe they are catching a wave, not swimming upstream against a tide.

That's how the Bush-haters feel right now. They're full of vim and vigor. They can taste victory in November, and they're practically bubbling over.

And they're in danger of burning out big-time.

When I wrote about the rise of the angry Left 10 months ago, the key piece of evidence was the rise of Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean. We all remember the story ?- Dean comes out of nowhere, raises a huge amount of money, seems all but certain to be the Democratic nominee.

But then, once he actually had to face actual vote-casting people and not merely angry Leftists like himself, Dean melted down.

John Kerry is no Howard Dean, to be sure. But the trajectory of the Democratic nominee's campaign is starting to look a little Dean-ish. Over the last two days, Kerry and his team have trumpeted the success of their fundraising, praising themselves for having generated $175 million in donations. That's what Dean's people did when their fund-raising went so well.

The Democratic party has sent out volunteers on the streets of New York, Washington and other major cities to register voters. The volunteers are carrying clipboards with "Dump Bush" stickers on them, and they ask everyone who passes by whether they think it's past time we "dumped Bush."

They can say anything they want to say and get votes however they want to get votes. The problem is, I think, that they hate Bush just a bit too much. Rage is an unsustainable emotion, especially when there are still four months to go before votes are cast. If the situation inside Iraq stabilizes to some degree and the economy keeps on humming, their anger will lose its purchase with people who haven't made their minds up yet.

Which brings us to the latest bit of political nonsense ?- the supposed threat to George W. Bush from radio comedian Howard Stern. Stern claims he is going to use his morning pulpit to fight for Bush's defeat because he's been getting a hard time from the FCC.

Stern's in danger of making the Lenny Bruce mistake. The great dirty comic spent the last few years of his life boring his audience to tears by lecturing them about the injustices done to him. Stern's listeners want to hear him talk to strippers and insult his producer's teeth. They're going to tune him out if he spends too much time blathering about Bush.

Which is, in a way, the same danger the Democratic Party faces. The hate-Bush stuff has been an extremely effective rallying cry, but scream too long without let-up and you get laryngitis.

I saw the movie Saturday, had to sit in separate rows from my friends. I highly recommend it.
By the way, get it straight, McG and pals, the "Bush hatred" comes from the actions of Bush and his administration, not from Michael Moore, not from John Kerry. Anyone who doesn't, at the very least, distrust the guy, has a screw loose.

I saw the film with friends the other day. Granted, I live in Seattle (our own congressman, Jim McDermott, is in the film), and we're probably not very representative of most of the country, but the goings-on outside the theater were quite interesting. Petition gatherers, leafletters and voter registrars were in abundance. I can't recall ever seeing a scene like this before outside a film.

There's something in the air, all right...

No one can tell me that the film isn't causing jitters in the Bush camp. They must be changing underpants on the hour.

au's quote, "No one can tell me that the film isn't causing jitters in the Bush camp. They must be changing underpants on the hour." As Norm said, if you just sit, it straigtens itself out, but I'm not sure how they continue to live in that stench. Wink

M Moore getting a lot of opposition
Being new here, and after reading about the 59 errors, I am convinced that the article is apparently accurate. Mr. Moore had the opportunity to respond to all of the accusations, and chose to not respond at all to some of them. I'm not sure why some of you folks are so defensive of Moore when it is becoming obvious that he is not accurate. The article about he 59 errors ,at first glance, seems to be reasonably truthful.
