Answer the following questions:
1. If 20% of the 20,000 UM-Flint students major in a humanity, how many humanities majors are there?

2. Last year on UM-Flint’s campus there were 45 burglaries reported among the 20, 000 students, what is the burglary rate for each 1,000 students; what is the rate for every 10,000 students?

3. Last year in Detroit the birth rate was 41.39 per 1,000 women. If there were 294,277 women in Detroit, how many births were there?

These are simple math problems. Think of this as a percentage (parts of 100)

Q: 41.39 per 1,000 women is the same as what?
A: 4.139% 0r .04139

Multiply that percentage of women's population (294,277) times .04139.

The result of that simple math problem will be your answer.

For the rest of the problems, do the same simple math process (turn the rate into a percentage) and multiply times the total for the answers. For any population you're working with, you need to simply or reduce the number into parts of 100, 1,000 or 10,000.
