I have a bird feeding station outside my window and a neighbor's cat likes to lay in wait below it for unwary doves of which there are many and he takes a toll. For months I've tried to nail him with a water pistol laced with vinager but it's too short range and he always gets away unsoaked. Yesterday I sprinkled fine ground black pepper on the ground on his customary hiding place, it's the only stratigic launch site for him and low and behold I think the problem is solved. This morning there was no cat.
I once did kind of the same thing only with thumb tacks. They seem equally effective.
Cayenne pepper works even better.
And here I thought we were going to be talking about how fat our cats were! LOL
The man that I bought my house from had installed a "squirrel knocker" on one of the trees in the back yard. When the squirrels jumped onto the corn cob it swung down and the squirrel would be knocked just hard enough to knock them off the corn cob. He said it was amazing how many squirrels would try the contraption over and over before giving up.
However, he did find one squirrel that would take the knock and eat the corn.
Have you thought about just chaining a Rottweiler under the tree?

The birds might not like that, though.
I was going to suggest one of those super soakers. Not only do they have a long range, but as the name says they super soak.
Thanks Linkat but the terrorist cat is on to water pistols and the like and is gone in a flash. I certainly would enjoy giving him a good drenching in vinager though.
Stilly - you're always soooo helpful - especially when it relates to cats!
The damned cat has developed a tolerance for the pepper and murdered another Ground Dove this morning. I think this beast would walk accross burning coals to get at them. I'm going to have to make the birds a little shark cage or something.
Do you have a zoo in your neighborhood? Zoos will sometimes sell Big Cat Manure.
I am extremely pleased this evening. My cleaning lady who is an Indian took the damned cat completely by surprise today and managed to douse him with a full bucket of water. I think his bird murdering days at least at my feeder are numbered.
