What time of year do kids make their first communion?

In May.

Back when I coached youth soccer, I went to the First Communion service
for Nigel's class. It was quite a sight -- the kids I was used to seeing all
covered in dust and mud and sweat scubbed up, bedecked in white and
gleaming like angels on a Christmas tree.
