Formula - Area of Circle, Volume of Cylinder

I have a question about the formulas:

Area of circle - a = pi x r^2 a = pr / 2

Volume of cylinder - v = pi x r ^2 * h v = p^2 * h / 4 * pi

I typed pi because I didn't know how to type the symbol.

My question - What does the "p" indicate in the second formula for both ?

Just curious.

@Randy Dandy,
p must stand for perimeter. This is an unusual term as with circles this is normally called circumference.

a=pi*r^2

C=2*pi*r C is circumference

so r=C/(2*pi)

a=pi*r*r=pi*r*C/(2*pi)=r*C/2

Volume of circular cylinder

V=a*h=pi*r*r*h=pi*C/(2*pi)*C/(2*pi)*h=C*C*h/(2*2*pi)

Remember C in this case is the same as p

@raprap,
"pi*r*C/(2*pi)"

"pi*C/(2*pi)*C/(2*pi)*h"

I am not clear on this part.

@Randy Dandy,
Volume
Base area times height
Base Circle A=Pi*R^2
Volume Cylinder. V=Pi*R^2*H
