The other night
As I lay sleeping
Whoah, I dreamed I held you
Held you in my arms
Well, but when I woke up this morning
I found out I was mistaken
Do you know that I hung my
I hung my head and cried

Whoah you are my sunshine
(you are my sunshine)
Ohh, my only sunshine
(my only sunshine)
Well, little girl you make me happy sometimes
(you make me happy)
When my skies are grey
(when skies are grey)
Umm, you'll never never never know dear
(you'll never know, dear)
How much I love you
(how much I love you)
Whoa, and I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
My sunshine away
(shine away)

{instrumental interlude}

You told me once, dear,
That you really loved me
And no one else
could ever come between, yeah
But now you left me and you love another, yeah
And you have shattered, oh yeah
All of my dreams

Whoah you are my sunshine
(you are my sunshine)
Ohh, my only sunshine
(my only sunshine)
Ohh, you make me happy sometimes
(you make me happy)
When my skies are grey
(when skies are grey)
Whoa, you'll never never never know dear
(you'll never know, dear)
How much I love you
(how much I love you)
Whoa, and I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Whoa, if you love me
(don't take my sunshine)
Umm-hmm, if you need me
(don't take my sunshine)
Uh-huh if you want me
(don't take my sunshine)
Waaaahh! Listen
(don't take my sunshine)
(don't take my sunshine)
I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Waaaahh! Listen
(don't take my sunshine)
(don't take my sunshine)
I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Whoah, my sunshine away
(shine away)

when I was a kid, I used to listen to"Ray Charles and Me from 2:30 to 3" on WHAT , a black station in Philly. They would feasture his latest gigs and played album cuts and live appearances. Then the DJ would call Ray like once a week and get an interview. I remember one time when Ray was putting the DJ on by saying he had to get his car to the garage and get the gas gage fixed cause its reading low all the time. This was in the late 60s

In 1962 when I returned to California for a time, there was a station in or around Los Angeles with an exclusively Ray program. I was thoroughly intoxicated with his sound.

There was a joke going around many years ago...
If you wanted to be a Raylette, you had to 'lette' Ray... Smile

I don't know what happened to the Raylettes. Some years ago I heard one split to pursue a solo career. Since I don't know her name, I could never follow up.

I'll guess that there were many Raylettes, like there were many versions of Ikettes and Harlettes, for instance. Backup singers come and go but you're right, I can't recall any solo artists with the dinstinction of being a former Raylette, unlike Katie Sagal (Peg Bundy in Married with Children) who is a former Harlette, Bette Midler's backup group.

Georgia On My Mind
Song Lyrics
Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
Georgia Georgia
The song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
as moonlight through the pines
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Hoagie: another original. If you haven't heard Peter Duchin's recording of Stardust, you don't know what you've missed.

Louis Armstrong's early version of Stardust does it for me. Ken Burns opened his Jazz series with this. It was such a wonderful taste of things to come.

I never saw him live, but I've always liked seeing the old footage of his preformances, swaying, and rocking back and forth on his bench at the piano. I love the way he moved.

The Pacifica radio station did the life of Ray, complete with lots of recordings and interviews I never heard before. It was on earlier today.

I saw him live, once, in Chicago, mid to late 80's, and his rocking and swaying on the piano bench was a little unsettling. You were fearful that, being blind,he'd lose his balance and fall. But then, you had to figure, he knows what he's doing. He'd been doing it his way for way too long.
His show was outstanding. Brother Ray rocked the bandshell THAT nite.

arts and Entertainment had a biography on him today also. His drug riddled past was featured as an example of how he could overcome all kinds of challenges . He even had controls on his plane so he could fly. They did a story about how he announced to passengers how he was going to attempt to land and how everybody began to pray. he was kidding but he apparently had a weird sense of humor

I understand that sense of humor, at least re the last post, farmer. This makes me want to look up about his blindness, was it total?

Some have a saying: God is love; love is blind; Ray Charles is blind; Ray Charles is God.

his blindness came on as a childhood glaucoma. Shortly after his brother drowned , Charles began going blind. He became totally blind as a gradual thing. By the time he was 8 he was blind. Later in life he developed a severe hearing poblem and he said how he could live sightless but not without hearing.
