@Sylvan,
I have a couple of Latin dictionaries left from the distant past. They have 18 different words for 'to scatter'; I've ruled out several as the particular meaning doesn't fit, but I still haven't found it. Have checked the past participles of the irregular ones but still doesn't ring any bells.

@gardengnome,
Type in Google
Latin for scattered
Then look down the list

@Sylvan,
Thank you, Sylvan. That verb was ninth on my list... I am constantly amazed that just a slight difference in wording can come up with a whole different set of matches in Google. I'd already typed in something very similar, with no result. And as I had the dictionaries it would have been really nice to have been able to use a book for once! Now on to my last five.

@Sylvan,
Found a couple more today. The ones I still need are 29, 38 (which I don't understand at all) and 46 (for which I still have to follow up the hint already given). Can I help with further clues for you?

@Sylvan,
33 I got nowhere googling 'Scottish cathedral birds nesting' but found the answer when I typed in a particular city.
44 good hint given in previous posts
49 googling the name comes up with the right book, but I have to admit that a colleague found the actual name. I don't know whether she read the whole book....

@sophocles,
Still grappling with 29 but 'Turkey' theory is good possibility. I assume motto for 47 is the obvious one? Any further hints appreciated. Merry Xmas all!

@Sylvan,
Q46 Part of the answer isn't seen on T.V. at Christmas anymore but 29 has me completely beat.I can see the possibilities of a turkey but can't find any evidence for that or anything else.

@Opsimath,
Yes indeed, Opsimath. I'd just got there. Actually, any carving that doesn't involve a turkey is a good thing (not a ref to #29, just a seasonal comment).
A very happy New Year to all on the forum.
