What don't you understand? The poet is saying if you are totally dishonest with people you will be unpopular, also that you if you are totally honest they won't like you either. Not a new idea.

A honest person is usually not a rich person. If you want to be rich, you have to be deceitful in some if not most aspects. If you don't care about money, then honest will make people love you.
