"Stalin was busy with his own flirtation. Even though Nadia was opposed to him, he flirted with the "beautiful" wife of Alexander Yegorov, a Red Army commander with whom he had served in the Polish War of 1920"

Hello all, in this sentence, why is it right to use "had served" instead of just "served"?
I though that when we have a specific year(1920) in a sentence, we don't use perfect. Thanks for any help =]

The "flirting" took place after 1920.

That phrase in question is describing an event that happened years before the flirting took place.
