TV/VCR hookup can only play movie tapes

I have a VCR hooked up to my TV and it plays tapes of movies very nicely. But when I try to play a tape copied from a TV program, or one made by a Videocam all I get is black and white hash rolling down the screen.

Is there something that I should be doing with the non-commercial tapes? Some feature that makes them handle differently from ordinary movie tapes? Rolling Eyes

Did you switch from TV to VCR on your player? The pre-recorded movies have a signal built in which automatically changes your player to the VCR setting. The tapes you make do not unless there's configuration in the set-up to do so (there likely is).

TV/VCR
Yes, and I know that at least the one that I recorded from a TV program did record, because I can see very fainly, through all the hash, the channel number in the upper right hand corner. So there is stuff on the tape.

If you tried the TV/VCR button and that didn't work, are you on Channel 3 or 4 for playback? Sounds to me like you should use the phone number with the VCR for technical assistance. I returned two Sony players as they had problems with playback. The one I finally received (the replacements were reconditioned) worked fine.
