It depends on how you are using the sentence.
Okay, here's how this will work. Albert goes onstage to sing, blah blah and blah blah change their costumes backstage now, then ..... .
You can't go back there right now. Blah Blah and Blah Blah are changing their costumes backstage.
The first one doesn't have to be part of a series of events.

"Are changing" means they're doing it right now. But "change" means while they probably aren't doing it now, they previously changed somewhere else
