Problem with Microsoft Word 2003 - can't open tools

I can open a document in Word 2003, I can type in it, I can start a new document, but when I go to tools, none of them work. For example, I tried to click on "Word Count" for number of words in a story I was writing, and it wouldn't work.
I tried to click on "track changes" for a document I was editing for someone, and that wouldn't work either.
Word is also my Outlook email editor, and it works fine for writing my emails.
I have found and deleted Normal.dot, but that didn't help.
Any ideas?

@Meenie,
Normal.dot is the template. So what you did for starters is that you blew away the template. Not good.

You might also have a corrupted version of MS Word. Do you have the CD for Word and can you reload it?

Can you do a restore? Do you backup up your computer regularly?

@Ragman,
I would do a restore of Normal.dot, if you can find it (wastebasket).
