A wheel is d feet in diameter.

Determine the following:

A- Distance in one complete revolution.

B- Number of revolutions in a mile.


My solution:

pi * d = circumference

5280/pi * d or 1681.53/ d = revolutions (formulas given in answer section-no answer).

Let d = .5 ft.

pi = 3.14

A - 3.14 * .5 = 1.57 ft.

B- 5280/ 3.14 * .5 = 840.76 = 841 revolutions in mile.

1681.53 / .5 = 3,363.06 = 3,363 revolutions in mile.

Where did I make the miscalculation(s) ?

Also, what does the 1681.53 represent ?

I have been out of school over 30 years and am trying to relearn math/algebra on my own. Need assistance occasionally.

A. One complete revolution is equal to the circumference of the wheel, and is equal to pi times d

B. The number of revolutions in one mile is the number of feet in a mile divided by the circumference and is equal to 5280 divided by pi x d

Working to 2 decimal places, if d is 0.5 feet, then the circumference of the wheel is pi x 0.5 = 1.57 and the number of revolutions in 1 mile is 5280 / 1.57 = 3363.05

You did (5280 / pi) x 0.5 when you should have done 5280 / (pi x 0.5). Note the brackets.
