1. A 10,800.00 car is purchased with a 12% down payment. Find the amount to be financed.

10,800 x 12%= 1, 296

is this correct?

2. the price of heating oil increased from 78 cents per gallon to 97.5 cents per gallon. Find the percent increase in price.

Is this a subtraction problem?

1. 10,800 x 12%= 1, 296 (amount paid)
10,800 - 1296 = 9,504 (amount to be financed)

2. 97.5/78 = 1.25 = 125%
25% increase in price.

I don't know if you are just looking for the answers to these questions, or are trying to figure out how to go about it... In case you are looking for more than just the answers, this is the formula that I was taught for algebra and I've never forgotten it... When you write your equation, all you have to do is remember...
n (or variable) = the word what
is= equals

So first, always turn your word problems into simple question form and go from there.

2. 97.5 is what percent of 87?

97.5= n x 87

So you'd divide both sides by 87 leaving
97.5 divided by 87 =n

n=125%

brandon's answers are right, just thought I'd give a little more input on how he got the answer Smile

(new price minus old price) divided by old price times 100% = the increase in terms of percentage

and if your answer is negative then you have a decrease
