Okay, so over the course of 5 years, I competed in 5 tournaments, all of which were round-robin style, where each contestant meets all other contestants, once per round. These were massive tournaments, far beyond any I've ever seen done via round-robin, and I've been trying to calculate how many battles I actually competed in, in total.
The first 4 tournaments (2010-2013) had a total of 1024 contestants, including myself, and the 5th and final one (2014) had a total of 256 contestants, including myself. After each round, the lower half was eliminated and the upper half moved on; therefore, in the first 4 tournaments, they started with 1024 in the first round, the second round had 512 left, the third had 256, the fourth had 128, and so on until there were 2 remaining. Once there were 2 remaining, it was no longer one battle against each person and then you move on; the final match-up was instead a best-of-7 series (best 4 out of 7) to determine the winner.
Now, I won all 5 of these tournaments (and I can't say I'd believe me if I were you, since I'm sure the luck gods wouldn't give me another win if there ever was a 6th one), and swept all the final match-ups (so in each of the 5, I won the 4 final battles, in a row, never having to go to the 5th, 6th, or 7th battle of the series to determine the winner). Also, I was always in the top-tier, so I never had to deal with tie-breakers.
Now, with all that backstory out of the way, I reached the conclusion that I competed in a total of 8661 battles over the course of the 5 tournaments. I determined it in the following way:
[4*(1023+511+255+127+63+31+15+7+3+4)] + (255+127+63+31+15+7+3+4)
= (8156) + (505)
= 8661
Did I get that right?
@bobsal u1553115,
I just want to be sure I didn't miss any numbers when figuring out how many battles I had in each of the tournaments.
