The big line moved one mile an hour
So loud it really hurt
The big line moved so loud
It really hurt
Back in '55
We were makin' thunderbirds.

To really love a woman
To understand her - you gotta know her deep inside
Hear every thought - see every dream
N' give her wings - when she wants to fly
Then when you find yourself lyin' helpless in her arms
Ya know ya really love a woman

gotta drag out the shel silverstein again...

Quote:
I was sitting in my basement.
I just rolled myself a taste
Of something green and gold and glorious
To get me through the day.
Then my friend yelled through the transom
"Grab your coat and get your hat son,
There's a nut down on the corner,
Givin' dollar bills away"

But I laid around a bit
Then I had another hit.
Then I rolled myself a bomber.
Then I thought about my mama.
Then I fooled around, played around
jacked around a while and then

I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned -- and it rolled right by
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned -- oh me, oh my

Has this turned into the stoner songs thread?

This one was known as "The Friday Song" where I grew up.

Quote:
Gonna sit down in the kitchen and fix me something good to eat
and make my head a little high and make this whole day complete
cuz we gonna lay around the shanty mama and put a good buzz on.

Well pass it to me baby, pass it to me slow
we'll take time out to smile a little before we let it go
cuz we gonna lay around the shanty mama and put a good buzz on.

Well there ain't nothin' to do and there's always room for more
fill it, light it, shut up and close the door
cuz we gonna lay around the shanty mama and put a good buzz on.

We gonna sit around the kitchen fix us somethin' good to eat
and make ourselves a little high and make the whole day complete
cuz we gonna lay around the shanty mama and put a good buzz on.

Ev'ry night and day (if I can help it)
We're gonna lay around the shanty momma, and put a good buzz on.

I need an easy friend
I do ... with an ear to lend
I do ... think you fit this shoe
I do ... won't you have a clue

I'll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can't see you every night for free

A great opening line must capture the listener's attention and set the tone for the rest of the song. Ideally, it should appeal intellectually, emotionally and esthetically.

I therefore respectfully submit:

"God golly, Miss Molly! Sure like to ball."

You know, I'm starting to think this thread has been done before, and previously I submitted (from the Clash, "Lost in the Supermarket"):

"I wasn't born so much as I fell out"

Seal, with all due respect to Little Feat, I suspect that was a cover. I seem to recall that the Holy Modal Rounders did it first...

[Subsequent editing] Well, I was half right. Found this on the web; sounds accurate, because now I do remember it was sung in "Easy Rider":

Don't Bogart That Joint
Lyrics: Elliot Ingber
Music: Elliot Ingber

Played by Little Feat's Paul Barrere and Bill Payne with Phil & Friends. The original verson (on the soundtrack of "Easy Rider") was by Fraternity Of Man. It was subsequently covered by Little Feat.

one more for the stoner's
from neil young- roll another number (for the road)

It's too dark
to put the keys
in my ignition,
And the mornin' sun is yet
to climb my hood ornament.
But before too long I might
see those flashing red lights
Look out, mama,
'cause I'm comin' home tonight.

Think I'll
roll another number
for the road,
I feel able to get under any load.
Though my feet
aren't on the ground,
I been standin' on the sound
Of some open-hearted people
goin' down.

I'm not goin' back
to Woodstock for a while,
Though I long to hear
that lonesome hippie smile.
I'm a million miles away
from that helicopter day
No, I don't believe
I'll be goin' back that way.

Think I'll
roll another number
for the road,
I feel able to get under any load.
Though my feet
aren't on the ground,
I been standin' on the sound
Of some open-hearted people
goin' down.
