Located in the town of Lucerne, this stunning bridge was built in 1333 and crosses over the Reuss river diagonally. Rich in history, it is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. The inside of the bridge is decorated by 17th century paintings depicting events in local history all of which was nearly destroyed in a fire roughly 20 years ago. About two thirds of the bridge and 85 of the 110 paintings were lost, some dating back to 1611. Only 25 could be saved or restored and the bridge itself was rebuilt a year later.

The famous bridge in Monet's garden in Giverny

(It's really the best time to visit it in spring - not because I've done it a couple of times but because it's the only time you get a chance to take photos without hordes of tourists on them ...)

The Daily Mail revealed the discovery of a tunnel linking England and France that had been constructed during the Napoleonic wars. Supposedly the tunnel was wide enough to allow an ass carrying two barrels of brandy to pass through it. The tunnel had supposedly been discovered beneath Dover Castle. The article explained, "It would have been used to rescue aristocrats from Napoleonic France, to transfer spies and to trade British goods with Europe." ... on April Fool's Day, 1988

@Walter Hinteler,
Danke schön
I thought it was more fun when the newspaper did not tell the april fool joke until next day and not like now the same morning.

@timur,
.
The band One Direction has had problems within the group. They were supposed to play in North Korea, but could not get in if they did not have the same hairstyle as Kim Jong-un
Two of the five Harry Styles and Louis William Tomilson have started the duo - Another Direction.

We went to Castellina. I remember liking it and took photos of our ride there in our rented Fiat Panda, but we didn't completely walk the town. Stopped somewhere for coffees..

@vonny,
When my wife and I did a Europe tour about four decades ago, we walked that bridge. I also remember a lion carved into a rock, and we rode a train up to Stansihorn. (sp)

The Anshun Bridge, China
The Anshun (Peaceful and Favorable) Bridge crosses the Jinjiang River in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Marco Polo mentions it as one of four Chinese bridges that he admired during his travels. That bridge was destroyed during flooding in 1980's. Li Chuncheng, the mayor of Chengdu in 2003, had the bridge rebuilt with a popular restaurant on top as part of an effort to revitalize downtown, which was highly successful. The new bridge is a three span, closed spandrel stone arch, with stone dragons seated on cutwaters below round openings to reduce water pressure during floods.

@vonny,
Too bad I missed that bridge when I was in Chengdu, but the old town section of town and the museum founded by an American made up for that loss.

@cicerone imposter,
Isn't Chengdu the place where the Waldorf schools got a big foothold and then became quite successful in other places in China? (maybe I misremember)

@ossobuco,
I don't know anything about the Waldorf schools, but here's a New Yorker article on it.
