What is the inner solar system?
The Inner solar system is the sun, the 4 rocky planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and usually all the asteroids and comets that come closer than Jupiter. Jupiter is sometimes counted as inner solar system, but generally everything that orbits the sun beyond Jupiter is called outer solar system. Things that cross Jupiter's orbit, a few thousand comets and asteroids, can be classed either way. We believe most of the asteroids are inner solar system, and are all but sure most of the comets (perhaps 5 billion of them) are outer solar system. Since there are about 10^16 = ten million times a billion cubic AU in the outer solar system, there are many more asteroids in the outer solar system than the inner, if asteroids average one per cubic AU in the outer solar system; the 5 billion comets is also likely a way low estimate. I am assuming that comets are mostly water and other volatiles, but are otherwise identical to asteroids. There are of course other definitions. Please comment refute and/or embellish. AU is the (mean?) radius of Earth's orbit = about 92 million miles. Neil
