A vehicle has a hole in the bottom of it's fuel tank that is leaking fuel at 1.5 gal. per hr. The veh. starts with 10 gal. (full tank), averaging 60 mph until it runs out of fuel. Average fuel consumption is 30 mpg (without losses from the leak). Calculate distance traveled before the veh. runs out of fuel. Thanks.

@Randy Dandy,
my application of poyla
what do i know?
What do i want--how far?

you got 10 gallons of fuel.
you're losing fuel to two sources--the leak at 1.5 gal/hr
and the car is burning it.
the car is traveling at 60 mile/hr
and it gets 30 mile/gal
so it burns (60 mile/hr)/(30 mile/gal)=2 gal/hr
so the tank is emptying at 1.5 gal/hr+2gal/hr=3.5 gal/hr

how long to empty tank?
10 gal/(3.5 gal/hr)=(10/3.5) hr

how far?
60 mile/hr(10/3.5)hr=(600/3.5) mile

Rap
