Why is interracial marriage still such a big issue in the US?

@Wilso,
Why do you think this has anything to do with the US? I see nothing at all associating or pointing to US. in fact, I know of no Arabian royals in USA.

I saw "black woman" as an inherently American term. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I know that "black woman" is not how a dark skinned female would normally be referred to in Australia. I'm reasonably certain that it's not common terminology in Britain. I'm damned sure that it is in the US. Once again, I drew what I believed to be a valid conclusion based on what I know of the use of language in the English speaking world, and the demographic of the forum.

What conclusion that author of this thread is an American by his used of the word black?

Even if true how do you then go from there to the conclusion that interracial marriages are still a big deal in the US no matter what one person on this website ask about even if he is an American????????

In 12 years I've seen countless posts on this forum regarding race, race relations, interracial marriage etc on this forum. Normally coming out if the US. Even if I made I made an incorrect assumption on this occasion, don't try to tell me that these issues aren't bigger in the US than any other English speaking country in the world.

I guess I'll ask the question on a more appropriate thread, when it inevitably comes up again. Goodbye.

A very very minor and ever decreasing issue in the US and how it compare to other nations on earth I am not as sure as you happen to be that we are the most concern about the matter. Off hand I do not remember hearing about anyone in the English Royal Family marrying someone with a dark skin for example. Nor as late as the 1940s have we feed people into gas ovens over their blood lines as was done in the heart of Europe.

In any case for the last two generations or so interracial marriages are hardly uncommon in the US even for very very high profile people and as a personal note my own family is of mixed races.

I can assure you that in Britain, "black woman" is the normal, non-racist way of describing someone who is a. black and b. a woman.

British people who happen to be black are often amused when white Americans call them "African Americans". I guess it's because they don't know what else to say?

@contrex,
Black is an adjective just like white is; it is not a derogatory term. Latin: Niger, Nigra, nigrum. I think the term African American was designed to ditch the adjective ( to help weave a decisive, more permanent status a particular type of American person). My sister lives in Australia and they do call Aborigenes black. My mother lives in England, and they do call people of African descent black. I've witnessed it...but I don't believe it is meant as an insult. I think social attitudes change over time. That's why there is a president of African descent in the U.S.

The family of the mayor of our most important US city [NYC]..........The so call issue of interracial marriage is almost a completely dead letter as far as the US is concern.
