Aridity of Atacama deserts(how does upwelling add to it??)

How does upwelling of Peruvian coast cause aridty to Atacama desert. Bcoz the winds here are NORTH-EAST TRADE WINDS. so winds will carry away the cold air away from coast. And shouldn'tbe a factor increasing effect of dryness that is produced.
