Space, The Space Age, Astronauts, Dan Dare, Rockets and those new fangled things called Satellites played a massive part in my early life.
In 1962, before the Beatles had stormed onto the scene, a simple instrumental number recorded by an unknown group called The Tornados took the western world by storm.
The genius behind the band was a young man by the name of Joe Meek.
Years ahead of his time, he knew that the weird electronic sound and the space age title of the piece would go down a storm.
It was the very first record by a British band to get in the US Billboard Hot 100.
My friends and I thought it was so different.....and so cool. Everyone was whistling it for weeks, and it was played seemingly non stop on the radio.

Telstar was on my "to be banned list" as was "Popcorn" a couple of years later ...

(There is a story connected to that above song about me and those nice girls, who entered the train in Southampton, especially that very, very nice one, ... but the story is x-rated!)
I visited with my parents my pen-friend in Switzerland. We stayed in a hotel, in which the Russian National Cycling team stayed as well (UCI Road World Championships in Zurich). The Russians played this instrumental all night, non-stop
