Google has failed me.

I'm trying to find the lyrics to "I Didn't Know the Gun Was Loaded" and all I can find are idioms rather than lyrics.

Can anyone help?

I remember the song. If we could come up with the artist the search might be easier.

Here is what seems to be a partial. I'm still looking:
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
So excuse me while I shoot you again!

Couldn't find the lyrics, but you could get a copy of the sheet music:

Is this what you are looking for!

Oh Miss Effie was her name
Through the west she won her fame
Being handy with the gun
But she drove the men insane
Cause she'd whip out her pistol
And shoot most any guy
And sing out this alibi

I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again

But one night she made a slip
Shot the sheriff in the hip
So the law it took a hand
And made Effie take the stand
And she pled, 'oh your honor
I'll know you turn me loose
When you hear my one excuse'

I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again
I didn't know the gun was loaded

But regarding the gun that I toted
All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I'll never, never do it again

INSTRUMENTAL

Yes the jury all agreed
That Miss Effie should be freed
But the sheriff's jealous wife
Was indignent (yes, indeed)
So she borrowed a pistol
And shot this village belle
And sang as Miss Effie fell

I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again

I didn't know the gun was loaded
But regarding the gun that I toted
All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I'll never, never do it again

Caramel--

You are on my eternal gratitude list. I heard it years ago and the only part that stuck in my memory was the chorus.

Mind you, it is a wonderful chorus when trying to discuss recent preventable disasters with a teen-aged male, but having the entire song is more satisfactory.

Many thanks.

@caramel,
awesome.. but there is one verse missing...

Well, miss effie had a date
with a wrestling heavy weight
He put a move on her
That she did not appreciate
so she whipped out her pistol
and shot him in the knee
and sang out this sad plee...

etc. etc.
But thanks - you filled out the blanks on the rest of the song for me Smile

@Noddy24,
I didn't know the gun was loaded, and I'm so sorry my friend. I didn't know the gun was loaded, and I'll never ever do it again. (That is all of the lyrics I know from that song. My cousin Billie Burns sang it for the first time on Broadway in 6/6/1932 in a show called "Hey Nonny Nonny!" Written by Ogden Nash.
