3 people went to a hotel and rented a room for $30.00. The hotel manager came back and told the clerk that the room costed $25.00. He instructed the clerk to refund the people $5.00.

The clerk went up to refund the money, but realized that you couldn't evenly divide $5.00 among 3 people so he kept $2.00 himself.

That means that the 3 people paid $9.00 each for the room, the clerk kept $2.00. Since that equals $29.00 what happened to the other dollar?

nice riddle, but everything makes sense.

At the end of the day the manager has $25, the people each have $1 and the clerk has $2, which adds up to $30. The riddle turns on a bit on misdirection. What the people paid and what the clerk kept should not add up to $30. In actuality what the people paid should add up to sum of what the clerk and manager kept- $27.

I prefer the one that goes there was a philisophers convention, but the manager was a room short and had to tell Aristotle he had no room.

No Worries says Aristotle who heads down to Descartes room. He knocks on his door and tells him he has to leave because there are no more rooms and Descartes is in the wrong room.
