how to shut up videos that start vocals without your clicking start

This is happening to me on Huffington Post. I can't find a place to shut the thing off, including trying to lower volume after I finally open the video (on already) by clicking the Open triangle. Maybe I'm just missing seeing some place I can X it out (they usually have such a place to x off the videos on sports sites, so I looked for it).

I much prefer to read than try to listen to someone yelling at me.

See if you can make it be quiet:

@ossobuco,

i'm not hearing anything when i go to that page.

some ads don't have a mute button, but they're usually very quick...

@Region Philbis,
Maybe it's my computer, somehow. It's been happening for at least a week. I'm about to shun HuffPo, not that that is a big loss.

On the video vocal, it's not quite right away that it happens. It starts yelling at me when I'm into the first or second paragraph of the text and I leap to shut it off and can't.

@ossobuco,
I hate that when it happens. Nearly spilt my coffee not so long ago.

I'm now in the habit of zeroing the volume most of the time, just in case.

@ossobuco,
I'm having the same issue on Huff Post. I can't find the audio source and I have to mute to read the article. The audio also doesn't seem to relate to the article I am reading. I think they are having software issues but that is little help for me.

@ossobuco,
I don't hear anything when I go on either.

@izzythepush,
I wonder if it is a windows 8 thing. It only happens to me on my newest machine.

@engineer,
I tried the sound mute (once I found it by clicking the video to start) and it sort of worked one time, somewhat delayed. The time that inspired me to make this thread, (and other times between), no, putting the mute dingbat down did no good, the anchor kept yelling at me.

Maybe I'll wait a week and try HuffPo again.

@engineer,
I've got an old mac...

Maybe it's a sporadic occurrence?

@ossobuco,
Still happening. I wanted to read the Paula Deen summary and got treated to what I take as a Brit talking about China.

Phooey.
