FOR WE WERE YOUNG AND SURE TO HAVE OUR WAY . . .

The local classical radio station just played this . . .

. . . and it made me think of one of the lines in English: For we were young and sure to have our way.

Which made me think of youthful folly. The young are indestructible, immortal and never, ever wrong about the things that matter. (Just ask them!)

It reminded me of when i was about 16 years old and listening to a song on the radio, and i thought to myself that this was the greatest music anyone had ever come up with, and i would never forget. About 15 or 20 years later, i heard that song on the radio, and realized that i'd forgotten it for about 10 or 15 years. I could tell you right now what the song was.

Do you have any examples of youthful folly?

Youthful folly?

It's a goddamn miracle I'm still in one piece!

What's that line? Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse? I'm afraid i'm past that now.

@Setanta,
I remember several, but I'm not done yet. I intend to have more folly. It's only through folly that I learn where I want to go next.

One big folly? Hummmm. I got married when I was sixteen because I thought I knew better than my mother and other adults. And for me, in that case, it was true. But that's just because I had a certain set of circumstances in my life that many others do not. The day I got married was a great day to me because no one, other than the police, could tell me what to do and what to try again. Still I count that decision to marry as a mistake. If I'd known then how short life is and how soon I'd be able to call my own shots, I would have waited and avoided the misery of that early marriage. Still I learned and continue to do so.

We were supposed to learn something?

I don't know who it would be that would make such a rule. I learn. That's all I know. I don't suppose there is any rule commanding me to do so.

Back in the 70s, i and a friend rented a house out in the country, way out. (It was half the price of a house half the size in town.) We used to like to go party at this tavern in a nearby town, about 15 miles away. We'd stagger out at closing time (2:00 a.m.) and hop in the van for the drive home. One of those times, for some idiot reason i can't recall, we decided we were in Japan. So we drove home on the left-hand side of the highway. Thereafter, we drove home on the left every time we left the tavern. I have no idea how we survived, but we didn't even have a close call. Boomer recalled this to mind with her remark about still being alive.

@Setanta,
I always liked living alone so several times in my life I lived in really rough neighborhoods. I would get off work at 3 or 4 in the morning and ride my bike home. I never had any problems but I had a lot of friends who were afraid to even come to my house!

One time I lived in a building that was all bikers -- the tough looking/acting kind of bikers. I was a wee college girl. Everyone thought I was absolutely crazy but all the bikers called me "baby sister" and they took good care of me.

I still make Mr. B nervous because I'll wander into areas most people would deem unsafe without batting an eye.

When I was sixteen, I made a decision to stay celibate.
That didn't work out either.

When I was 16, I've tried to do something very adult (on hollidays in England): I went to the 'Follies'.
It turned out to be a second class ice revue ...

That's one of the most germane response i've ever seen to a thread--youthful folly indeed!

In my youth, I thought that devoting myself to a cause and supporting and working for the "right" politicians would improve the world. What a joik I was.

I also thought that I was right about almost everything.

One out of two ain't bad.

Certitude seems to be much more a disease of the young.

Haters gonna hate...

I've thought up the perfect "comeback song", but I think I'll wait five years to post it -- until my plans have really started coming to fruition.

Hint: it's a Doris Day number about ants, plants, rams and dams.
