Satt_focusable, is Archie Shepp still around? He was always too avant guarde for me. John Zorn is a little more palatable, but I just can't get into the music even though I appreciate the talent.

Archie Shepp's ballads are not avant-garde. You can listen to them late in the night.

Satt--I tried to listen on Amazon, at least the one that had a few tracks that could be played. It still is too broken and harsh for me. I remember him from San Francisco in the 60's. Everything I heard him play was atonal and screechy loud. Is he like John Zorn--a lot of avant guarde improvising with some amazingly beautiful ballads? I really haven't heard anything by him since the 60's.

Diane..
They are almost out of stock. (I said I liked his ballads on "vinyl", which means records not CD, and I miss my turntable.)
Archie Shepp's ballad playing is something in the line of Gene Ammons/Coleman Hawkins playing but of course in his own style.

Thanks Sat. I should have known it would be vinyl. Too bad so much of the good, old stuff is so hard to find.

Diane..
I am sorry about that.
Gene Ammons is excellent. I would search if his CDs are available.

Here "Boss Tenor" by Gene Ammons is available (imported).
(I used to love "Boss Tenor" on vinyl also.)

Amazon

(If the page does not open in the link, then go to Amazon portal and try search with "Boss Tenor.")

amazon has a good selection. they don't ship to guam, seems we don't exist. what many of us have found though, is on the return address you fill out everything correctly, but, instead of guam, you put honolulu in the space. when the package/goods get to honolulu, they check the zip code and send it off to guam.

I highly recommend oldies.com, who have vinyls as well as some really good offers on cd!

(I've bought a lot of cd's there recently: 3 for 2, plus postage, is much cheaper than a single one of those here!)

Walter..
Thanks for the link.
The album "Bird Symbols" (Charlie Parker) is excellent to its extreme. It has been one of my favorites on vinyl.

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We coulda made it cruising, yeah

Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Hmmm. I tried to find Brook Benton.."All it takes to make a hit record..."

No luck.

pueo, sorry. Things are light and airy here in Florida.

Are we really happy with this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in this masquerade

Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reason that we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

We could just start over but it's oh so hard to do
When you're lost in a masquerade

Leon Russell
