Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna. Well, tower is sort of an exaggeration, but the place is interesting - incredible mosaics, not that I've seen them. Building was started under the Ostragoths..
Ahem. Ravenna also has, I take it, since I haven't been there, great food.
Snort! That reminds me of Pienza. A designed town by the Piccolomini pope, an enlightened fellow as these matters go - forget his papal name. The church there sits in a precarious position, it seems. Went in to look anyway.
Ah, Pius II. One of the early pius's might have been involved in starting the whole ghetto thing. Naturally I don't remember, but I'm guessing not him.
piuses?
I just looked at the Piccolomini family members. Now there's a group.
On the ghetto starter, it might have been a Paul. I remember the name started with P.
I suppose I should look it up. They were reigning somewhere around the same time.
