Given that 80% of the information is visual I would say the hat is worse.
Boundary parameters being the size of the hat and your loss of visual field and the loudness of the person talking.

What's worse: Having an emergency miracle-of-birth event raising its ugly head in the bar you own on your busiest night when it's winter and you can't tell her to take it outside like you would if it were a fight?

Or: A one week visit from your mother-in-law . . . in the winter, sub-zero temperatures, stuck inside!?

A: The visit from Ma-in-law is much, much worse... the problem in the bar would be easily solved by dialling 000/911 and letting the Ambos deal with it!

Neither. If you lose your wallet, you kinda lose your mind, too. And if you lose your mind, you kinda lose your wallet in the sense that it won't even matter to you anymore.

Since I've had both thrown at me, I can tell you that burnt toast is worse; it can put your eye out . . . or at least scratch it so bad that you'll wish it had been put out, whereas a burnt omelet doesn't even really hurt, other than the humiliation. But keep your eyes closed!!
