Jack Whittaker and wife Jewell

WINFIELD, W.Va. (March 11) - The man who won the largest single lottery jackpot in U.S. history has had a run of bad luck this week: He's been robbed twice and sued.

Police said the business office of Jack Whittaker, who hit the $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas 2002, was broken into Tuesday and $2,000 was taken.

On Thursday, Whittaker's vehicle at his home was broken into and property was stolen. State Police spokesman Sgt. Jay Powers said he could not release details.

No arrests have been made.

Earlier in the week, Whittaker was sued by an employee of a Cross Lanes racetrack and casino who alleged he assaulted her in March 2003. He has not responded to the civil suit, and has not been charged with any crime.

In January, in separate incidents, Whittaker was charged with threatening to kill the manager of a bar and with drunken driving. Both cases are pending.

Also in January, his vehicle was broken into and $100,000 was taken. No arrests were made.

In August, Whittaker was allegedly drugged while at a strip club and a briefcase with more than $500,000 was stolen from his vehicle. The money was recovered and two club employees were arrested.

okay, what I want to know is why, if you have 100K in your car you dont have an alarm able enough to protect it.

Also, what was he doing in a strip club with 500K in cash...planning to spend a month there pushing the 5's into the G Strings?

That isn't as bad as the winner of the Lotto in California. Somebody won $28 million, and never claimed the prize. The time has expired, and that money reverts to the State schools.

Hasn't this guy ever heard of using a credit card instead of cash? This guy has something wrong in the head, when he carries around that kind of cash in a breifcase.

I agree!

It sounds as if this guy is still living life the way he did before he won all the money -- in the sense of how he handles his money anyhow.

If I had that much cash, I probably wouldn't have a home anymore. I'd be on the travel-the-world-for-the-rest-of-your-life plan! Mr. Green Maybe home would be one of those suites you can buy on that luxury liner...forget the name of it.

Ooooo....if only dreams could ALWAYS come true! Very Happy

c.i. Well at least the schools benefit! True?

caprice, Yes, the schools benefit. As for dreams coming true, the problem with most dreams is the high expectations. When goals are dreamed of in small increments, they can come true! I think most people fall into the trap of making big dreams during their childhood that are usually far-fetched, and they're disappointed when those dreams are not realized. My .02c worth of opinion. BTW, when I was a child, I didn't have "any" expectations of doing well in my life. You know what? Wink

I knew there was a good reason why I never buy lottery tickets. If you win, you become a target.

But I agree that this dude isn't too tightly wrapped. Anybody with that kind of bank account -- and, therefore, unlimited credit -- carrying huge chunks of cash around is just incomprehensible.

Well, my guess is that the cash stuff is about hiding something, I mean really..why else..and um...why in a strip club ..not that you know you couldnt if you wanted to but, you could buy the whole place drinks on your bank card with that kind of cash you know?

My theory is that he wanted to show off. What a foolish man.

(Caprice, that's exactly what I'd do too...)
