For example: Sisters of Mercy's rendition of the Dolly Parton song "Jolene."
Sid Vicious' rendition of "My Way" comes to mind, though given the fact that it was released posthumously, it was also somewhat poignant...
I'm not sure it's "odd", but I remember being surprised when I learned that it was Pearl Jam, singing "Last Kiss"...
Oh where, oh where can my baby be?
The lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

Sid's "My Way" is one of those songs that always cheers me out of a dark mood!
Yep, that was Sid, all right!
I just heard a remake of Led Zepplin's Rock n Roll, done by a female in a kind of a easy bluesy style. Doesn't have the same catch as the original but it was interesting.
Tori Amos' rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is haunting.
William Shatner singing "Rocket Man"
Didn't Tori do a whole albums of covers?
Yup, "Strange Little Girls"
Amazon's listing
Looked it up, Strange Little Girls. All songs written by men, performed by Tori. I heard some of it. I remember it being pretty good.
Just about any popular star's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before a sporting event.
I have Tori playing right now.
Under the Pink. Little Earthquakes, Choirgirl Hotel ( 2 CDs), and Strange Little Girls, on "shuffle."
'T was odd to hear "Do I worry", which I only knew in the saccharine-voiced sweet-soul Ink Spots version, as a trippy bit of rasta DJing by one "Scotty" on the Trojan DJ Box Set ... and really funny!
I love Isreal Kamakawio'ole's 'Somewhere over the Rainbow/It's a Wonderful World.
This is what I have on my CD player,
Martin Sexton - Blacksheep
Harry Manx - Live
Jesse Cook - Nomad
Ruthie Foster - Crossover
Jeb Loy Nichols - Easy Now
The Waifs - Up all Night
Micheal Franti - Everyone deserves music
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - Bark
Tim O'Brien - Two Travelers
and lastly
Dick Gaughan - Sail on
Joey Ramone's "It's a Wonderful World" is also worth a listen. He recorded it while he was very ill (and dying of cancer).
Smell Like Teen Spirit, The Bad Plus
Nights in White Satin, The Dickies
Up From The Skies, Rickie Lee Jones
Star Spangled Banner, Jimi Hendrix
Alison, Linda Ronstadt was pretty damned odd.
Satisfaction by DEVO was odd. Satisfaction by the Residents was odder.
Dancing in the Streets by Fred Frith.
More when I think of it.
Speaking of Devo, from the "Supercop" soundtrack,
"Head Like a Hole" originally a Nine Inch Nails song.
"Money" by the Flying Lizards (I think that was their name).
