Are U.K. DVDs compatible with American players?

I know that VHS tapes have different formats, but I wondered if there was some difference in the format of DVDs too. Will a U.K. DVD work in my American-made DVD player?

Formai (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM}isn't the only problem, there's Region to consider, also

Hardware is available to convert formats, and there are hacks to get around region encoding, as well. In fact, some DVD players are Region Independent, though none will do format conversion ... for that you're still gonna need outboard hardware.

Well, I got to thinkin ... its been a while since I checked, and it turns out time marches on ... HERE'S a relatively cheap cross-format, region-independent player. The same website offers a burner with similar capabilities, as well as other players that can do the job with a few more bells and whistles for anywhere from some to a lot more money.
