I'm surprised no one mentioned: Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah

@hingehead,
This is so overtly religious I could commune.

An overtly secular song from Queen given a religious treatment by the Gregorian Chant monks:

Seventeenth century church music by Johann Pachelbel was transformed into a rock guitar solo.

@wandeljw,
Hmm, interesting. I'd like to hear it a cappella, to give it more of a feeling of a Gregoran Chant.

Here's an inspiring interpretation of Gregoran Chant, a very early religious musical genre:

Choralschola der Capella Antiqua München - Procedamus in Pace

And here is an exaple of the heights that Renaissance polyphony reached, the Gloria from Giovanni Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli:

The very first time I heard this, I immediately became verklempt. . . as is happening now. . . talk amongst yourselves. . .

Sometimes when something wonderful happens after nothing wonderful has happened for a long time, this song pops into my head:

If I may turn this around for one post,
I'm a theist and this is my favorite atheist song.

How could I forget? A church hymn with lyrics written in 1922 and set to a centuries-old celtic melody became a popular hit in the 1970's.

A brilliant thread and my favorite posters hovering like bees in a honeysuckle bush.

Ms Toad ...yes, "In a Gol Dang Vida" was almost a hymn in my teen years.
George, as a theist you make a solid case for "Imagine".

As some of you know I've spent years accompanying a praise band on the piano. The quality of contemporary religious music is astoundingly good.

I'll be around posting the best new stuff to my non-believing ears.

A mother comforting her daughter with the promise of Jesus and his healing hand. Is there anything to compare in the atheist household?

The slide guitar solo is hair-raising.

@djjd62,
...a beautiful hymn. I think I first heard it on a soundtrack of a Sally Field movie "Places In The Heart"

anything with the combination of the Constantinople Ensemble and Barbara Fortuna convinces me I believe in something

I get chills.

I've been at several performances by Constantinople. Always amazing.

Add Barbara Fortuna and I'm done
