In the reactions below identify which elements have been oxidised and which have been reduced.

Anode (+) Fe(s) ------------> Fe2+(aq) + 2e-
Cathode (-) H2O(l) + 1/2O2(aq) + 2e- ---------> 2OH-(aq)

Anyone, please Confused

OILRIG. Oxidation is loss of electrons, reduction is gain of electrons.

Look at the oxidation no. for iron. It's gone from 0 to 2+, so it's been oxidised, which always happens to the anode. This is the oxidation half.

In the cathode, water has been reduced. THis is the reduction half.
