Retirement of Priests and Nuns

Diocesan priests are provided for by the diocese.
Members of religious orders (both men and women) are provided for by
their orders.
Those who leave the priesthood or religious life are not generally cared for
by those organizations.

Perhaps many of these people perceive their fellow priests and others as going through motions or worse. They may wish to leave the church but can not because it would result in their impoverishment.

If they were to speak out against church practices without quitting, they might receive an order to be silent. If they disobeyed, they might be left out in the cold.

I am guessing.

I very seriously doubt that many priests and religious remain out of fear for
their material welfare.
