This is a good question about our relationships with food.
I'm an irish-american from California who happens to love Italy. I went there for the first time in 1988, and ever since then the majority of my cooking is based on italian regional foods. I like foods from many other places, but italian is my foundation food now.
My relationship with it? I think of italian food as comfort food. No matter the specific dish, the tastes seem to connect best with whatever spot in my brain has food recognition.
