Phoenix was talking about the first on the charts, not the very first rock and roll song. That I'd sure not know but very likely pre '54. RATC was the first one I heard, at twelve.
Rosie and the Originals started in an old garage right here in San Diego...

That very durable lead singer from The Crests, Johnny Maestro, formed
a group called The Brooklyn Bridge. They had this big hit in '68:

Another do-wop classic, this was the first single out of Motown to hit number one on the Billboard hot one hundred. That was in 1961, and the Beatles covered it a couple of years later. Then in 1975, the Carpenters had a number one hit when they covered the song.
