Those fifties rockers could all sing. Coasters were so far above the Beatles it's not worth talking about.

these guys were big on the regional high school dance circuit in the early 1970's - they were better than I realized at the time

the night before I left for university in 1976, the local Labour Congress was having a Labour day Picnic

Stompin' Tom was the main act. It was a great night with friends and lots of local politicians glad-handing through the crowd.

The big musical on Broadway in 1968 was Hair. Here's one of the songs, as recorded in 1969 by Oliver. Good morning everyone!

Such songs as this reach out way past their shelf life - lyrics as well as melody that last well past the trends of the day. NASA used it as a greeting song which was transmitted to any possible other intelligent extra-terrestrial life forms. Silly twits! Too bad mankind on earth might not qualify as one. Well at least they'll know we like to play and can write good music.

Now that made me think of "Maggot Brain." This group, Funkadelic, was associated with the disco group Parliament (both started by George Clinton). Not a very commercially successful group, Funkadelic had an important influence on the funk, disco, R & B and psychedelic genres.

Edit: Circa 1971.
